Vietnam closes Ca Mau airport for repair starts work on another

Ca Mau Airport in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta is being closed for repairs until February 1 as Phan Thiet Town in the south central province of Binh Thuan geared up to build its own airport.
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam will upgrade the Ca Mau Airport under the supervision of the Southern Airports Authority (SAA). At present, the airport only hosts Vietnam Airlines flights to and from Ho Chi Minh City. All of them will be suspended during the renovation.
Vietnam Airlines has contacted customers who have paid for tickets to arrange a solution.
Ca Mau Airport accommodated military aircraft during the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in early March.
In related news, Binh Thuan Province plans to begin work on Phan Thiet Airport on December 30. The project team has cleared 170 out of 543 hectares designed for the airport and expects to finish that work early next year.
The airport will have 3.05 kilometer a runway and a 5,000 square meter terminal capable of accommodating up to 300 people at a time.
The BOT (build-own-transfer) airport project is expected to cost VND1.6-trillion (US$74.8 million) and will be open for service in 2018, offering domestic service to and from Tan Son Nhat, the central and southern region including to Da Nang, Da Lat and Phu Quoc. The airport will also serve as a headquarters for military and rescue operations.
Phan Thiet once had a military airport in town, but it hasn’t been used since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
